Consistently Hitting Your Aim Point

Every golfer tries to hit their target. The process to accomplish this fundamental part of golf is the bane of many players. For some reason, they miss their target because of many swing mechanic faults. Of course, we all want to fix these challenges and over time practice is the only real approach to fixing swing errors. In my case, I have a slightly different error that causes me to miss my aim point to the left. It is a fundamental challenge that has become more apparent due to my changes in how I hit my approach shots. I am still working through this primary error and believe I have a way ahead that will help lower my golf scores.

My fundamental error is hitting the ball left of my aim point. I am not pulling the ball or hooking it in the wrong direction. I am hitting the ball left. At first, I tried to identify the root challenge and after a few shots I found out that my alignment to my aim point was left. I was not sure why this occurred until I took the time to analyze the step by step process I use to hit all my golf shots. This type of introspection works for my golf game and I found out that I was setting up left of my target.

My misalignment all started when I changed my feet on approach shots. I am playing with a more open stance and as such, my body turns left more than normal. I am hitting the ball much better with consistent results, but he aiming needed some work. This domino effect is nothing new and now that I identified the challenge, I understand the solution needed to straighten out my shots on my aim point.

The fundamental issue I determined was using my old visual cues for alignment with my new stance. By doing so, I would hit the ball left of my target. My swing plane was straight as I rarely sliced or hooked my ball. Hence, I needed to adjust my body alignment in order to hit my aim point / target line. It seems like a simple fix (and it is physically) but, my mind had to make the change of looking at something different while I set up. This change was a challenge as I am trying to break years of ingrained body position while hitting any shot.

My final correction was to point my left shoulder at my target. This visual cue is strange because it feels like I am aiming far to the right. Fortunately, I am not set up poorly, but it sure looks that way. I fight, mentally, with each shot and the more successful I am with my new process, the more it will become the new normal. For now, I will continue to work on aiming properly until it becomes second nature.

Any change to our golf swing will result is some secondary challenges. The process you use will help reduce the frustration of missing our aim point. In my case, it was a visual challenge that I think I corrected. Only time will tell for sure. For now, I will stay vigilant on fixing my aim point challenges.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. This is one of those problems I want video to solve. I don’t like blind changes. I want to see what I’ve been doing because feel never tells me the truth about my actual swing mechanics.
