Ugly But Effective Golf Shots

How many times have we mishit a golf shot only to see that the results were awesome. This happens from time to time and I have had my share of ‘ugly but effective’ golf shots. The reason for the success of an ugly shot is that I prepared for success. Sometimes we have to accept that the results was suppose to happen regardless of how it happened. In golf, this is a constant during every round. There are lucky bounces and those are not what I mean in today’s posts, but other shots that have a positive result. Let me explain further.

The shots I am talking about would sculling the ball out of a bunker only to have it hit the lip, bounce up in the air and land on the green a few feet from the pin. I had intended to hit my ball there, but the process was not in the cards at all. Or I hit my ball fat and watch it dribble onto the green and roll close to the pin. Again, not what I intended, but the result was perfect. There are many other examples of these types of shots and after many years of playing, I think they are part of the game and are not flukes at all.

The entire predication of any shot is intent. Of course we always intend to put the ball in the hole and rarely that happens from off the green. However, as I go through my pre-shot routine I visualize the result I intend. The process of seeing the upcoming shot in my mind is very important to achieving the results I want. If I do not visualize my shot it is difficult for the universe to provide something that aligns with my intent. It is all about focusing on what we want to happen, not the how.

To be fair, like all things, we need to go through the process of executing the proper golf shot to achieve our desired results. Sometimes the execution phase breaks down, yet we still achieve the results we want. This happens from time to time and I attribute the success of my shot to my pre-shot visualization. Now, some of you are skeptics and respect your view on this topic. For me, I use a technique that works for my game and I think it would likely help yours.

The next time you are out for a round, try to visualize your golf shot. This mental process will help focus your intent which should produce better results. As I said previously, it works for my game and I will continue to visualize all my shots moving forward.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Yeah, I thinned a chip during the scramble that took off so fast I thought it was gone, but it stopped dead in it’s tracks just a couple feet from the hole. I of course acted like I meant it. lol
