Anytime we hit the green there is an expectation that we have a chance to sink the putt. It really does not matter how far the putt has to travel to the pin, all golfers think there is a chance. I feel that most of the time I putt well regardless of the distance. Well, to be fair, the longer the putt, the less likely the chance I will make the putt. This fact is nothing new, but I think there is a certain aspect of putting that is often overlooked when dealing with long putts. It is not a secret, but I think many players forget to invoke the simple rule of long putting.

Playing Golf In Fall Weather
Unlike my golfing friends to the south, fall golf provides an additional challenge because of the changing and unpredictable weather. It is inevitable that the temperature fluctuations will force golfers to evaluate their equipment, clothing, and desire to want to hit the links. This time of year can provide the best of conditions to play golf, however the conditions change so quickly that all four seasons can be experienced in one round. Regardless, if you live in the northern climes, then you are aware that to prolong our season, we need to have the proper equipment and mental attitude to play.

The great debate continues about whether a more expensive ball plays better than a less costly one. As a rule, I use an expensive ball (Pro V1 and Pro V1x) in the warm days of summer and a Wilson 50 in the early spring and fall. Much of my choice depends on the weather; actually the temperature of the day is the critical factor. Playing in the best ball tournament last weekend proved that I was a bit quick changing to the Wilson 50 during the warm wet weather.

On Sunday past, Blair and I played in our second round of the Clear Springs Golf Course 2 person Best Ball tournament. We anticipated a great deal of rain, but luck would have it that it by past our location and we only had a few sprinkles through the round. The course was in fantastic shape, our playing partners were great fun, and we played very well for 16 holes! Overall, it was a great round. We played much better than our final score of 3 over 75, but alas, that is golf. As Charles Dickens said: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

Fall is a challenging time of year to play golf. In my area of Ontario, it is a challenge to dress according to temperature, moisture and wind because it changes quickly without notice. I have discussed wearing layers of clothing in previous articles and that is a must right now. The challenge for most players is keeping their persons warm and relatively dry, keeping their equipment dry, and determining if walking or riding is the best mode of transportation. Regardless of what is decided, carrying more stuff is better than doing without.
