If I Had a Choice…..

I was asked a question by one of my friends yesterday about golf. This is not an unusual thing; however this question got me thinking. I answered very quickly, but now that I had the chance to think about it, I thought it would be a great topic for an article.

Of course, the choices he gave me were very pie in the sky, but sometimes it is fun to play the “what if” game. It is great fun to think of how good my game could be come if I had half the skill of some of the pros. I would be able to hit the ball over many hazards and zero in on pins as if it was second nature. Continue reading

Winning the FED Ex Standings

The race for the FED Ex Cup is underway and all the points gained over the past 8 weeks count towards making the 10 million dollar pay off. I try to pick winners each week in several fantasy leagues and I can tell you from experience that it is impossible to know who will win from week to week.

For example, this week at the Sony Open Justin Thomas started the tournament with a magical 59. As the youngest player in PGA Tour history to accomplish such a feat, I am pretty sure no one predicted Thomas running away with the top prize. Keeping this in mind, it is very challenging to determine who will have the most FED Ex points leading into the playoff or is it?

The Return of Tiger Woods

According to TigerWoods.com just over a month ago, Tiger Woods announced he would be returning to competitive golf. “……he hopes to play in the Safeway Open, Oct. 13-16, at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. Woods also intends to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open, Nov. 3-6, in Antalya, Turkey, and the Tiger Woods Foundation-run Hero World Challenge, Dec. 1-4, at Albany in the Bahamas. He will participate in the Tiger Woods Invitational presented by USLI, Oct. 10-11, on the Monterey Peninsula.

Jesper Parnevik says that Tiger is ready and is “flushing” the ball during practice. Parnevik also indicated that Woods is ready to play competitively. Having not played at the élite level since 2015 at the Wyndham Championship, it is difficult to judge if he is actually ready. Regardless, the golfing world is anxiously waiting for Woods return next weekend at the Safeway Open. Are you? Continue reading

FedEx Cup is Almost Over

With the 10 million dollars on the line this weekend at the Tour Championship, the remaining 30 players are excited to tee it up at East Lake GC, Atlanta. I have said earlier that I am not overly excited about the FedEx Cup and that has not changed. I do, however, enjoy trying to pick the champion each week in my fantasy leagues.

I am in 4 leagues, but late entry has basically eliminated me from any potential winnings. To date, I have picked only one winner with a couple of second places. My lack of success this year has not quelled my continued efforts to succeed.

Do You Really Care About the FedEx Cup?

The FedEx Cup is intended to be an interesting golf competition because of the “play well – move on” format. However, over the past few years, my view on the FedEx Cup has started to change. At the Barclays, 125 players will start, but only 100 players will move on to the next event at the Deutsche Bank Championship. The third week at the BMW championship will only have 70 players competing; then at the TOUR Championship, 30 players will be left to vie for the 10 million dollar grand prize.

In previous posts, I suggested that the FedEx Cup would become infinitely more excited by adopting the World Cup format. Keep narrowing the field, but base it on how a player performs that week, not on the accumulation of points throughout the year.  Continue reading
