There are about 504,000,000 putting tips on the internet. How do I know this, well I used google so it has to be completely true……right> 🙂 All joking aside, there are so many putting tips out there that I could not even describe the depth and berth of areas they cover. I have tried a bunch (number actually unknown) and some have helped. Others did not fit my putting game and had to be discarded. But, through all of my efforts to improve my short game I did find one putting tip that was a sure fire winner. It is something I always do and feel it is the primary reason for my success on the green.

The Importance of A Two Putt
If you were offered a two putt on every green before your round, would you take it? Would a two putt on every green help or hurt your score. I my case, it would hurt my score because I generally have more one putts than three putts. I will mention that most of my holes (usually around 12) result in a two putt. The days I am playing well, that number decreases to 9 or 10. However, I do believe that most players overlook the importance of a two putt in their endeavour to shoot lower golf scores.

Developing a strong putting technique and honing putting skills is the ultimate stroke saver in golf. Over the years I have tried a plethora of different drills and techniques with the goal of improving my putting. Ultimately to improve our overall putting game, it comes down three areas to which I should have focused my efforts. I am fairly confident that if we asked any golfer, an open face putt is less than ideal. As a player who considers themselves an above average putter (hovering around 29 putts a round on average), I strive to have my putter head square to my intended line. It is something I practice during my training sessions even in the off season. I understand its importance and understand that the slightest angle from square is compounded give the length of putt. It is simple math.

Your putter is used more than any other club during a round of golf. Hence, it is critical that you grip it in a way that best fits your game. I have experienced with all kinds of grips over the years, but always revert back to a standard grip. The only reason I tried different grips was to see if I would feel more confident or see any improvement to my results. I never did, so back to the basics is worked for me. There are many different variations to holding your putter, but three basic ones is the best place to start if you are planning on making changes or just starting to develop your putting game.
