Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Today is celebration of Irish culture and in particular, remembers St Patrick, one of Ireland’s patron saints, who ministered Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century. It is generally a day of merriment and fun in Western cultures.
More importantly, as I was reminded by Josh from Golf is Mental, today is the start of the run to the Masters. With only 21 days to go, many players are scrambling to qualify for the first major (like Adam Hadwin) by winning one of the last three tournaments. It is a very tense time and with the added pressure of being at API this weekend, new cracks in their game might appear.
Interestingly, of the top 5 players at the API only one has not qualified for this year’s Masters. Lucas Glover, sitting in 2nd place one stroke back, is vying for a chance to make it to the big dance. It is difficult to say if he will be able to keep his form together for 3 more rounds, but I hope he does. I am sure qualifying for the Masters is in the back of his mind, thus adding that little bit more pressure on his game.
Early in the 2017 professional golf season, the Shell Huston Open will provide the most pressure for players still trying to qualify for the Masters. I my opinion, the pressure to win this event is tremendous because it sets a journeyman player up for the entire season. Many pundits will say no, no, no! Conceding that playing in the Majors is like a pressure cooker; try being one of 50 guys fighting for the last invite to the big dance. These professionals will be riding a roller coaster of emotions, try things that only superman should try, and watching the leader board as if it was a lottery draw. The pressure will continue to build until like a balloon and one poor swing, they are all done!
The race to the Master’s starts today – St Patrick’s Day! Mixed with the fun and excitement of the green beer celebrations, many professional golfers are trying to qualify for the first Major. It will be exciting to watch today and I hope that Lucas Glover can find his way to the winners circle.
