I have decided to become a golf rules official. I figure after all these years of learning and reading about golf, this is the next step in my education. Currently, I would assess my knowledge as better than the average, however I feel I am lacking in knowledge somehow. So, in 2018, I have decided to achieve the Level 2 Rules Official from Golf Canada.
“Golf Canada offers several programs to learn the Rules of Golf. Our Education Program is designed for all golfers wishing to improve their level of knowledge of the Rules of Golf including recreational golfers, competitive golfers, professionals and rules officials, or those wishing to become a rules official.” (Golf Canada)
Over the last 5 years or so, I felt that something was missing. After doing some more research, the topic of the significant changes to the rules of golf coming down in January 2019 caught my attention. I figure now is the time to get involved and really understand the subtle ins and outs of the golf rules.
Being a low handicap player, my understanding of the rules helps me navigate around the course. I apply the rules to gain the greatest (and legal) advantage for my next shot. I many cases, I can save a shot or two by applying the correct rule at the right time. This application of the rules is a must for golfers. Knowing this and other important aspects of the rules will shape your course management and decision-making. They are all intertwined.
Today, I embark on my journey. The following is the steps I must take and for now, Level 2 is my goal. After achieving this milestone, I will re-evaluate and see where I go next.
Delving deeper into the rules will help my golf game. I will know the proper application of the rules in more situations and this will inturn save strokes. It is a smart thing to do and it is time to start learning. Have you ever thought of being a golf rules official?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

I haven’t ever given it a thought. Likely because I don’t play in tournaments myself I suspect. Let us know how it goes. Even though I’ve never thought of doing it myself, I’d find the process interesting.

Kevin,
I am looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds. It is a fairly esay process for the first two levels. More to follow.
