A Putting Tip By Annika Sörenstam

Whenever the names of greatest golfers of all time get bantered around, rarely do I hear a woman’s name make the list. This topic has caught my attention and will be a discussion for another day; for now I want to pass on a quick tip by Annika Sörenstam that will help you make those critical putts between 4 and 10 feet. By following her advice, you should lower your score and build confidence during clutch times.

First, here is what she has to say:

I use the exact same routine when I putt except I do not stand behind the ball. I stand just below the ball and look at the hole while getting the feel for the speed I need I need to make the putt.

I also pick a spot just in front of my ball (the distance will vary depending on the length of putt) and I line up the putter head before taking my permanent stance. This entire process is considered my pre-shot routine for putting. It has served me well over many years.

I think the most important aspect of Annika’s routine that is often overlooked is the initial swinging of the putter to establish the speed you want to hit the ball. Many players just swing back and forth without any real intention to determining anything. It seems that it is just something they have seen others do, but do not understand why. Establishing the speed you want to hit the ball before standing over the ball is very important and requires more consideration than anything else during your putting stroke.

I realize that I have stated in several articles before that line is king over speed and I still believe that; however, I am starting to understand that the relationship between the two are symbiotic and to pick a good line, you have to understand the speed at which you are going to putt the ball. This debate continues to rage on.

Regardless on where you stand, Annika’s full routine is a good one and I recommend you practice it if you want to become a better putter. You can many some minor changes to match your game, but the 3 steps she performs are core to lower golf scores.

  2. Thanks for this tip. It is very much what I do. Determine the line and where I thunk the ball will break. Then figure out speed to get to that point and speed after towards the hole. I lately have been better about practicing the stroke I will take, and not taking the outter head back too far, which is a problem with me.

  3. I’m 6 feet tall. I have two putters that I’ve used over the years. One is a 36 inch long mallet from Bobby Grace and the other is a 33 inch long blade from Rossi. The mallet has a nice long line on it that helped a lot in aligning it for my putts and allowed me to stand a bit taller, but was too heavy to get the speed right consistently. The Rossi only had a dot which I found much harder to align right but speed wise it works great. I spent many months last year practicing with both and finally got the right solution for me. I painted a line on the Rossi myself. Now, since it’s short, if I stand a little taller while setting up I can take my practice swings over the ball safely and get the feel for the speed while at the same time I can see the line I painted and match it to my intended direction. My putting has improved immensely since I worked that out. I’ll still be fooled by the read, but I seldom miss what I’m aiming for anymore. Putting is so personal. You really have to put in the time to find the right solution for you.

      Thanks for sharing your story. You absolutely right about putting being very individual. It takes a great deal of practice to develop something that works fornyour game. I am glad you worked out what is best or you.
