Open or Closed Putter Face

I am fairly confident that if we asked any golfer, an open face putt is less than ideal. As a player who considers themselves an above average putter (hovering around 29 putts a round on average), I strive to have my putter head square to my intended line. It is something I practice during my training sessions even in the off season. I understand its importance and understand that the slightest angle from square is compounded give the length of putt. It is simple math.

I found that an interesting graphic that demonstrates the challenges for an open or closed face putt.

If we look at the graphic, it is easy to extrapolate how the various degrees off square affect our success rate. It does not take much to miss the putter left or right. Therefore, I reiterate that I practice making my putter face square in many of my practice sessions.

I have several different drills I use and this one by Robin Symes is very good for developing the proper technique. Although he is only hitting a two foot putt, the concept of a square putter face really comes to light.

The next time you are at the putter green, try this drill; I think you will be pleasantly surprised on how effective, simple and repeatable this putting drill can be. After pushing and hitting 10 putts from two feet, move out to four and six feet. At the farther distances, just hit the putts right into the hole.

Understanding that a square putter face to your chosen line is a fundamental for good golf. If you are struggling with your putts from inside 10 feet, I suggest you focus on squaring your putter head before moving forward.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim, I tried this drill at the course today and it is superb. Took a little getting used to at first but I found it forces you to exaggerate your follow through. Once you do that, you put a real nice roll on the ball. I drilled at two feet and then moved out to a 30-footer where the distance accentuates everything. I was pleased as punch when I left the course today.

    Thanks!

  2. The drill you posted could also be done without needing a hole. Just use two balls using one as the target and that should do the trick nicely. Aim small miss small.

Well with just 2 days left in the year I managed to set a new personal best round today. I am now Mr. 58. On our short executive course anyway. 😂 7 under thanks to 9 birdies. 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 14, and 18 and 2 bogies on 6 and 12. And I missed bird on 9, and eagles on 1 and 14 by under 3 inches. All left but they weren’t pulls, I just failed to read the putt’s well enough or maybe to factor in the breeze properly. Not sure I just know I hit the lines I aimed for. What a day.
