As our game evolves, we all reach a tipping point where a few simple tips will allow us to achieve new milestones. We have put in the work and now we just need a little push to reach our goals. Sometimes, we focus on the right path and others….not so much. Rich Shiels offers five things we can do to lower our golf score below 85 if we have put in the work. They are simple, repeatable and sustainable. Hence, I support them.
The five tips offered by Shiels are just the tip of the iceberg. Depending on what your game needs to advance to the next level varies from player to player. What is offered in the video is more of a common sense approach that you may or may not have experienced. Regardless of the level of your game, these tips could be a new or a great reminder.
I like all the tips, but the one that resonates with me is equipment selection. Years past I hit a crossroad for club selection. Should I maintain my traditional 14 clubs that included a 5 wood or should I put a 60° wedge in my bag. I ultimately decided on the wedge and have not looked back. I do not use this club often, but when I do I am always glad it is in my bag. This type of decision was instrumental with me developing a game that hovers around 3 or 4 over par during most rounds.
As you peruse the video, take stock on your game. Is all of what Shiels saying fit into your game or only a few tips. It is up to you to decide what works and what needs to go to the trash bin. Regardless of what you decide, I hope this video helps lower your score and allow you to increase your enjoyment of playing golf.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
85 is just a number. Shooting under it or over it is determined by more than just our game. I mean course, tee box, and weather play a big role too.
You and I will easily break 85 on some courses, struggle to do it on others and it very well might be out of our reach on some too, especially from the back tee box.
And breaking 85 even on a course I break 80 on regularly can be to next to if not impossible when the wind is blowing 40+ mph.
We need to be realistic when choosing a number to shoot for.

Kevin,
The intent of Shiels number of 85 is more akin to the ability to play better golf. By choosing that number, he offers a bench mark for readers to understand that we can consistently play better golf by adopting his five tips. I agree with that view. The number does have many factors, but the overall intent is to play better golf.
Cheers Jim
