Toe Chipping Made Easy

Chipping around the green can be a challenge. Additionally, it offers a plethora of techniques you can use to chip the ball close or in the hole. Over the past few years I focused on toe chipping in order to develop a technique to consistently hit the ball close. I like toe chipping and have developed my 5 and 7 iron for longer chips, but have not mastered using the higher loft clubs because my confidence is not quite there…..yet. Regardless, toe chipping is a great way to successfully chip the ball when your lie is not the best. I guess your next question will be how to tip consistently with the toe of the club.

I will go over some of techniques I found important after the video. This how to video breaks things down to simple actions that we can all replicate:

The three things I found to be important when toe chipping will hopefully increase your learning curve for this skill. First, use a putting stroke because it is something you can already control. I still use my normal grip for hitting irons, but the putting stroke offers more control of the club head.

Second, I stand a bit closer the the ball and grip a bit higher. This did feel awkward at first, but after a few strokes it was something I felt comfortable with when addressing the ball. Part of standing closer to the ball is placing the ball in my stance. More often than not, I play the ball in the middle of my feet regardless of the iron in hand. This position works for me and as suggested in the video, you have to find the ball position that works for you.

Lastly, it is important to follow through after contact. It is a huge mistake if we stab at the ball. A fluid follow through promotes solid contact and allows us to consistently hit our aimpoint and landing area. Following through is definitely important when chipping off the toe.

Chipping with the toe of your club around the green is a great skill to learn. I am glad I decided to learn this skill as it has improved my up and down game. I do not chip off the toe all the time, but it is a great shot to have in my bag.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Chipping toe down is how I deal with an uphill, against the grain lie on Bermuda grass. It’s much less likely to dig in. And it’s helped get me out of some really bad lies in the rough in the past too.

The ball comes out lower and runs more. Also the more lofted the club the more difficult to aim. But it’s easier with practice like everything in the game.
