Never Forget Your Follow Through In Golf

There are many different areas of discussion in golf that it is sometimes difficult to decide where to focus our efforts. One of the areas often overlooked is the follow through after contact with the golf ball. Many amateurs (myself included in my early days) pay little attention to our actions after contact not realizing that they are as important as the setup and swing movements. How we follow through will affect the ball ball flight and might be the cause of many wayward shots. Is your follow through consistent and effective? Let’s discuss.

There are a few tells on whether your follow through is effective or not. Do you fall over after contact? Do you step out of your golf swing? Does your club head finish in different positions after each stroke. These and other questions are tells as to whether your finish is effective or not. Here is a quick video explaining the core fundamentals about our follow through.

When I am swinging the golf club well, my follow through is consistent and well balanced. I try to point my belly button to the target and finish on my right toe. It is a feel I can replicate and know when I am in the proper position.

The video suggests posing while your ball is in the air and I think that is a good idea. I use a count of three before moving because this is sufficient for my swing. You can find the length of pose time that works for you at the range.

Another tell I use is where my hands finish. As in the picture above, I like to have my hands finish high and in line with the nap of my neck on the left side. The picture above shows that I did not finish my follow through completely because I was hitting a shorter club. However, the positioning is good and I did hit the green…..if I remember correctly. 😉

As you focus a bit of time on the proper follow through, remember to pose for the camera for a couple of moments. This act of standing still will help tighten you swing movements and you will be able to find the tell that might be causing you challenges during contact. Regardless on how you approach your follow through development, spend some time posing. It will help you in many areas of your golf swing.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Yes, I remember in my first golf lesson my instructor Steve emphasised the follow through. Told me, no matter what the strike was like, to always finish in the full follow through position. Sound advice! Rob
