Many times I played a new golf course from the tips. I felt (earlier in my career) that I was getting a better experience from farther back. Well, this was never the case. I did not always shoot a low score and as a result put undue pressure on my game and those around me. As I matured, I found that my golfing experience was just as good as hit from the proper tees. What I mean by proper tees is that I teed it forward!
The Hartford Golf Club in the UK has adopted the Tee It Forward approach to improve the overall experience for all golfers. I think all golf courses should do the same!

“TEE IT FORWARD is aimed at helping golfers have the best possible experience on the golf course by playing from a set of tees best suited to their abilities. The initiative encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance.” (Golf Canada)
As the golf season is just around the corner. I thought I would offer this bit of advice when traveling to a new course (or even playing your old course). Selecting a teeing area by handicap is smart because it improves your overall golf experience. The next time you are walking to the tee, trying following the above advice and play from the tees that best fit your game. I am confident everyone will be happy you did!
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
We have a similar sign on one of our courses. It’s been there decades and has always been meant to help keep golfers moving at a reasonable pace.
And that’s a valid enough reason in itself, but I know of two other reasons to take the advice. First, current thinking as I understand it is that we learn to play well by playing well. The harder we make it on ourselves, the harder it is to learn.
And second, it’s a good way to learn your course better. It will give you some new options to consider when you move back to where you normally play.

Kevin,
Both are great reasons to TEE IT FORWARD. Golf season starts this weekend. 🙂
