Hitting The Ball Well With Poor Results

Yesterday I played in a two person scramble with my friend Len. On paper we looked very strong, but the results did not live up to the hype. We were matched with Blair and Fernando as per last year and overall we had a great time. There were lots of laughs and jokes shared by all. As I played my round, it became evident that something was wrong with my game as I would hit the ball very well with poor results. I was coming up short even though I had plenty of club to reach my target distance. My line for the most part was very good, but distance control was way off. I think I know why and will rectify this issue moving forward.

The temperature yesterday was around 20° C (68°F) and sunny. The wind was cool and overall it was a pleasant day on the golf course. It was windy which I accounted for with every shot. Unfortunately, I was short on most of my approach shots. My ball looked fantastic off the club, yet it would fall out of the sky about 10 yards short of my target distance. I think I know (after thinking about it) what the problem was and I guess I am not really surprised after doing some research.

As we walked up to the first tee, I pulled out a brand new Titleist Pro V1x. This ball is designed “The Titleist Pro V1x doesn’t have a single required swing speed, but its higher compression and spin rate are better suited for faster swing speeds, typically 95-105+ mph, for optimal distance and control.” “The high and mid-long game spin of the Pro V1x golf ball is detrimental to the consistency and accuracy of some high handicap golfers.” Given the description of this golf ball, it is not suited for my golf game. Although I am considered a lower handicap player, I do have a spin rate challenge off the tee and with some of my irons. This high spin rate causes a shorter distance off the club and I knew this fact, but had to learn the lesson the hard way, again. I should have used a different ball like my Wilson 50 (which I had two dozen in my vehicle).

Traditionally, I change my ball in the fall to a lower compression golf ball. My swing speed is around 95 mph most of the time and a lower compression golf ball would be the one I need in order to maximize my playing ability. As stated I was making great contact, I just did not see the results expected. It was frustrating and I did not clue in that I was using the wrong ball until after the round.

Len played very well (as expected) and I did contribute a bit. However, we shot a disappointing 2 under. We did shoot 5 birdies with 3 bogeys. Not the round we expected.

However, we did have two great meals, a fantastic time on the golf course, and overall we will try and play as a team again next year! Osprey Links Golf Course put on a fantastic event and as always the staff were courteous, professional and engaging. Thanks to Jeff and his team for another fantastic event.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Oh how we wish it were 20° C (68°F) here. And dry. lol It’s in the 90’s and the feel like temps are in the 100’s when it’s not raining. And it’s done a lot of raining this year. Our poor course is being swamped. We haven’t played the back holes but twice in 2 months and one of those was a mistake when we didn’t notice the closed sign had been knocked down.

Tomorrow, I’m pretty sure they’ll be open again if there is any chance because there is a charity scramble benefitting vets tomorrow. I’m playing on a team of the 4 longest hitters in our skins games. We think our chances are pretty darn good. lol But it’s going to come down to the greens really.

Ours aren’t in the best of shape right now. They were aerated recently and haven’t healed yet so balls don’t want to hold their lines. I’m hoping they get rolled before we start because they were pretty bad when I played 2 nights ago.

Anyway, wish us luck. Or better yet, a cool breeze. lol

    • Kevin,

It sounds like the conditions of your course are trying for sure. We are starting to experience fall weather and the challenges of playing on the greens when it is wet and cool. All good, no complaints. When I play on aerated greens, I hit the ball firm and take half the break. Slamming it the hole works best for my game. Good Luck in the skins game.

      Cheers Jim
