There are so many proclamations about how easy it is to fix any part of our golf game that I thought I would jump on the bandwagon. Working/fixing our golf game is easy depending on the starting point. If you are new to the game or have played for a long time, the progress and success of your development will change. Using myself as an example, changes to my game, with a tremendous amount of practice and study, will gain me a stroke per round, at most, over the course of ten rounds. Some days I will play better than others, but the average score will not vary much over the long haul. Therefore, I would conclude that fixing or improving any part of my game will take time, patience, and focus to make the magic happen. You might feel that way as well and improving in golf is definitely not a quick fix.
Now that I have completely discouraged you, there is more to this story. The key, in my less than expert opinion, is to try and develop consistency in your game. Finding that skill that allows out hit any shot with confidence. When I played my first round of the year, the only thing I was confident about was staying warm. My golf game was all over the place and I did not know from shot to shot what was going to happen. However, after years of practice and understanding of my game, I know that my consistency will come back fairly quickly. I do, however, have to put some effort into improving all aspects of my game.
So, the next question is where to start. This is actually easy to answer and would provide a great foundation of improvement for all players. We focus on improving our consistency from the pin out. I have discussed this many times over the years and it is still true today. I will start with my putting, then chipping, then approach shots and finally staying in play off the tee. This is a simple process and one that has proven very effective for my game.
The basic drill I use for all my shots to the green is the star drill. It helps me create a target environment that allows me to adjust my nest shot depending on the results of the previous shot. It is my go to drill and I recommend it for everyone.

This drill is not new and I did not invent it. However, it is a critical drill when I want to improve my overall game. The distances from the hole can vary depending on your approach distance. That is up for you to decide. The drill helps in many areas such as understanding how hard to hit a 9 foot putt. Where to land your ball on the green so it rolls out to a distance inside the smallest circle, or where to aim when hitting longer shots. This is a very useful and universal drill. I fully recommend it to all golfers at every level.
The easiest way to improve your game is to practice. This is a tough concept for many as it takes time and effort to improve any aspect of our golf game. There is no easy way to improve in golf other than putting in the time and practice. I would suggest that focusing on your putting and short game is the fastest way to lower your score. If you track, this is where we make the most strokes. Regardless of what you decide, using the star drill will definitely help your golf game.
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
