The past week of golf was a great one! As my mid season form is improving, I played three times in three different events. It was a fun week and I learned a great deal about my game. Mostly, to stop overswinging and let the club do most of the work. Does that sound familiar? Regardless of your woes, I am sure you have sparks of greatness and increased fun from time to time. That was my week!
My first round was in a three person scramble at Osprey Links Golf Course. This is an annual event for my friend Blair and I. This year we added Cameron (new golfing friend) to the mix and we had a fairly strong team. We looped around hitting the ball very well. Unfortunately, we could not break the 20 foot mark on approach shots. We seemed to have many longer putts for birdie which we did not convert often. Regardless it was great fun as the golf course provided great food and prizes. Speaking of prizes, we won third in the fourth flight! Being in the money is always a great thing!
As always, Jeff and his team hosted a fantastic event. His staff is very professional and friendly which enhance our golf experience every time I play there. Thanks Jeff for a great time at the Osprey Links Golf Course.
Next, I played an early bird round with my hickory sticks from the forward tees (2600 yards for 9 holes). Instead of playing two balls, I focused on just playing one as I carried my clubs for nine holes. I found that I hit the ball better and more consistently when staying focused on only on ball. It might be my new approach moving forward, but we shall see. I hit my hickory sticks very will and finished with a smooth 40 (6 pars 3 bogeys). I hit my hickories well, but not consistently enough to have many chances at a birdie. I figure my GIR was around 40%. Although I did not shoot any birdies, I did play very consistently and avoid a higher score on one hole. It was a very satisfying round.
Lastly, I played Men’s Night on Thursday. It was great fun and our team shot a smooth 7 under for 9 holes. Interestingly, we shot an eagle on the first hole and used all three of my shots! After a good drive and strong three wood shot into the green, we were left with a 50 foot putt. Well, if you have not guessed it yet, I sunk the putt to the jubilation of the team. The rest of the round was very much a team effort as everyone contributed with some strong shots. The eagle on the first hole was my first of the season. I am not hitting the ball as far this year and that has resulted in less opportunities; that is the life of an aging golfer.
Overall, I had a fantastic week of golf. The Northern Hickory Tour is coming next week and I will be playing four rounds with some great friends at four different golf courses.
