Do You Wear a Golf Glove?

I do not wear a golf glove. I wore one about 25 years ago, but broke the habit of and cannot remember why. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but the more I look around the golf course, the more I see that I am in the minority.

I am not trying to buck the system; nor am I a rebel, but I do not see the value of wearing a glove while I play golf. Additionally, if it is so valuable, why do players remove it when putting? Shouldn’t a golf glove be important for all shots?

Of course my opening is said with a bit of tongue and cheek. I realize that a golf glove has value and instead of me describing to you why, I thought is description by Golfsmith.com would better suit our needs:

“The golf glove is worn on the ‘opposite’ hand, so right-handed golfers wear the glove on their left hand, while left-handed golfers wear the glove on their right. The reason for this glove-to-hand placement is that the ‘top’ hand on a golf club is the lead hand, meaning its grip is the most crucial.”

“Golf gloves are not required but are recommended for golfers of all levels. While most golfers wear gloves, some choose to remove their gloves for short-iron shots and while putting so that they can better “feel” the clubface when it is striking the ball. The main reason to wear a golf glove is to improve grip. A golf glove is tackier than skin, particularly in hot weather, and will help prevent the club from turning in a player’s hand. Golf gloves also help create more friction between the grip and the gloved hand, which makes them particularly useful for golfers with loose grips. As weather can play a part in the game, specialty gloves may be used in unique situations (i.e. rain, cold weather).”

As I said earlier, many people wear a golf. Actually about 85% according to my recent poll.

I play golf in all weather. If it is raining so hard that I cannot grip the club, then it is time to head for the club house. My hands do not sweat enough to warrant a glove and if it is really cold, I wear mittens in between shots. Overall, I feel that it will not improve my game, so I do not wear a golf glove.

Here is a quick reminder of when to change your glove from GolfAcademyOne.

Do you wear a golf glove? If so, then why?

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Jim,

I do wear a glove. I just started with one when I was younger because I thought I was supposed to, and just kept using one. I’ve hit balls on the range without a glove and got a blister fairly quickly, so maybe that’s why I keep using one. Just feels more secure to me.

    Cheers

  2. Jim,
Like yourself I’ve never worn a golf glove and I’ve never seen the need to. The only time I would consider it is during really hot weather to help remove some of the sweat on my palms but a towel works just as well. Other than that I would take the added “feel” over a stickier grip any day!
