Yesterday, I played in my second golf tournament in two days. It was the Senior Men’s Invitational at Osprey Links Golf Course. It was the first time I entered in this event and I have to say, it was great fun and something I will try to enter again next year. The stroke play format was divided into age groups and I was in the 55 to 59 group. We had many different age groups and caliber of players, yet everyone appear very satisfied with the format, the tee selection and their playing partners.
I was paired with Blair, Pat and Jimmy. We are all friends and have played many rounds of golf together in the past, so yesterday’s round was very comfortable. We started on the 18th hole and the shot-gun start sounded at 10:30 am. I had not aspirations as to finishing well, but given my current handicap, I thought I had a chance to win.
Blair, Pat, and Jimmy did not have their best rounds. They struggled with the very wet course and surprisingly quick greens. However, as the round progressed, they picked up their games and if we had another 9 holes to play, they would have been back to normal. Regardless, they were fun to play golf with and provided a tremendous amount of encouragement as I was playing quite well.
Without going through all the holes, I was even par on the front nine with 4 birdies (3 in a row) 2 bogies, a double bogey and two pars. On the back I started with a birdie, however I went 5 over in the last 8 holes. My game seemed to disappear (especially my approach shots) and I limped in for a smooth 75. The winner of the event shot a 73 and finished second overall and first in my flight. I cannot complain about my score, but I do wish I had a few shots back going down the stretch. On a side note, I shot 5 birdies and did not win a skin!
I will say that my putting was outstanding. I sank at least 4 putts from outside 20 feet with the longest being about 55 feet for birdie. The hole was as big as a manhole cover. As I stated in previous posts on putting, how my putting goes, so does my scoring. I am very happy with the results and was happy with my overall performance in the Senior Men’s Invitational.
I have to mention that the staff at Osprey Links put on a fantastic spread. This year we had prime rib. It was very delicious and the service outstanding. A big shout out to the Osprey Links staff!
Have you played in any tournaments lately? Do you enjoy playing?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
