It was a 60/40 split, but Tiger Woods is still a huge draw for professional golf. It seems that no matter what is going on, he either on TV or being talked about. Well at least until the end of the tournament and the media has to focus on the leaders. I have to say that I am not surprised because much of the success of modern day golf can be attributed to Tiger Woods.
When I said 60/40 earlier, it was based my latest research.
While the world of golf watches Tiger’s every move waiting for something amazing to happen, the fact is that it usually does. He is the consummate golf entertainer. The fact that he rule the golfing world for 20 years adds to constant quest of golfers to see what he will do next. Kind of like this:
Personally, I fit into the 40%. The fact that he is on his 5th comeback does add to my interest, but not significantly. I do not feel that he offers any more entertainment than Bubba Watson, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, etc. These player provide the same level of entertainment just as often as Tiger Woods. The top players make amazing shots but my perception is that they don’t get the same coverage if Tiger is playing.
I am not being disparaging to Tiger Woods. I just like watching the entire field during a tournament. I think every player has the opportunity to make an amazing shot. I would prefer to watch it live, but have to accept that I am in the majority when Tiger is playing, so taped will have to do. How do you compete with the masses!
Do you think Tiger overshadows the rest of the field during an event? If so, do you like it?
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
It’s a problem we have with our media on any topic. Be it sports or politics. Too much time is spent in the wrong areas just because too many viewers are easily drawn to the wrong thing. Whether it’s Tiger, or Trump, the media will waste our time with covering their every move to the detriment of others who are arguably more pertinent.

I agree that the focus on Tiger is a little overboard for my liking. I think other professional golfers deserve some of the spotlight.

Jim, I think he does. He is must see TV even though his game and level of dominance are not the same. When he’s in contention on the weekends, you can hear the networks cashing in.
Cha-ching!

Brian,
That is for sure. Additionally, the roar of the crowd every time he does something is quite distinctive and the announcers cannot wait to show what he did. I am not sure his star power will lessen anytime soon.

Jim, if he wins at Augusta, we will witness a media storm the likes of nothing like we’ve ever seen. Okay, maybe OJ riding in the Bronco, but you get my picture. I’m not sure if I’m up for the onslaught but bring it on if it happens!

It will be a spectacle for sure. I am not sure I am ready either. I do not think his game is any better than the current elite players. He has history of greatness for sure, but nothing that is head and shoulders above the rest anymore. I am not sure he can walk slowly into the sunset; the media will not let him.
