My Best Golf Shot of The Day

Even a blind squirrel will find a nut from time to time. That is how I felt yesterday when playing golf. I played very consistently, but nothing fantastic or special. I hit 65% of the fairways and 45% GIR, but I was able to score okay and walked off the course with a 76. This is still a few strokes higher than needed to lower my handicap index, but I am getting there. I did, however, want to share my last shot into the 18th green, it was by far the best shot of the day!

Standing on the tee of my last hole (9th on the card since I started on the back 9), I was facing a 2 club wind. I hit a fairly good drive on this 378 yard par 4 hole, but did not hit it far. I had 185 yards left into a strong left-side wind and I knew that my 4-iron would not make it.

Osprey Links Golf Course 9th hole, 185 yards to the center of the green.

So, I pulled out my 3 hybrid knowing that I hand plenty of club on most days. But, yesterday the wind was strong and I had to account for the affects it would have on the ball. I took aim to just left of the 100 yard marker and decided to hit it full. I made perfect contact (can’t say I did that all day) and my ball launched right on line.

My ball knifed through the wind and landed on the the elevated green. It came to rest about 20 feet from the pin on the back of the green. As I watched my ball sail through the air, I was amazed how little the wind affected my ball. It did push it left a bit, but not as much as I had anticipated. Regardless, my ball came to rest on the green and I was putting for birdie on the last hole.

After a tap in par, I was quite happy with my round. Especially the last hole. Hitting a solid shot from that far out into a strong wind does wonders for my confidence moving forward. The cool thing is I swung the hybrid just as Brian and Kevin suggested. Do not think, just do! Thanks fellas for the great advice.

So, I saved my best shot of the day for my last approach shot. I am not complaining mind you, but I could have used a few more of those during my round. I guess in the big scheme of things, I have a teach point hear and can us it moving forward.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Reading your description, I was puzzled by one thing at first. I thought your natural shot shape was a draw so I found it a little weird that you would aim all the way to the left side of the green. But then I realized I wasn’t thinking two club wind. It made more sense after that sunk in. The fact that it didn’t effect the flight as much as you thought it might is just one of those things we were talking about the other day. It’s really hard to judge what the wind will do to the ball and it often doesn’t do what we think it might. But from the result, you got it close enough. Nice job on what sounds like a tough finish.
