Sand Talk With Tiger and Scottie

Amazingly, the simple solutions of sand play can be found in the coolest of places. Imagine Masters Champions Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler offering a clinic on how to hit out of a sand trap. This information they provide would be invaluable to any golfer. Each has a different technique and use different clubs (routinely) to splash out of the sand, but both have some fundamental or core actions that lead to their success. Listening to them chat about sand play greatly enhanced my knowledge; talk about being lucky or what!

Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler are two of the best golfers in the world. Yes, they are entering different phases of their careers, yet the both have the same tenacious desire to be the best at what they do. Hitting the ball out of the sand is a challenge for most amateurs. However, if you listen to what Tiger and Scottie have to say, this specific golf shot can be a little less daunting.

There are a couple of points I want to point out that might be overlooked by the casual observer. First is the follow through each time they hit a ball. It is long and high. If you do nothing else in the foreseeable future to improve your sand play, definitely follow through on each bunker shot.

Second, Scottie asked Tiger if he rotates his lower body during a sand shot. Tiger said he does now due to medical limitations, but he never did in the past. This shot is completed by mostly using their upper body. There is very little rotation of the hips as they swing through the ball. At first I had to ensure I heard Tigers quick comment on the matter and I was correct. Not using my lower body during a sand shot is something I adopted a long time ago and it works very well. Again, if these two amazing players are talking about this topic, then it must be important.

Knowing how to hit your ball out of the sand is an important skill. Many amateur golfers use the hit and pray method of playing bunkers. If we follow what Tiger and Scottie have to say, then sand shots might become a little be scary. The choice is yours.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!

  1. Well I like how Tiger uses his sand wedge by default. I do too. My 60 is a specialty tool. My 56 is my tool of choice for most shots around the greens. I use other clubs too but none as often or for such a variety of shots.

Today I think I used the putter just once from off the green, the gap wedge I know I only used once and the 60 I only hit once off the cart path on the last hole because the area I’d have had to drop in was nasty and that 60 works great off the crushed shell path my ball sat on.

Had I been two feet closer to the green I’d have probably just bumped it to the hole with the gap wedge. There was little break to deal with and only 20 feet of green to roll the ball over. That would have been my call, but on the cart path, that 60 left me a 4 foot putt that was needed to keep anyone from winning the last skin. The only 4 footer I missed all day. lol Oh well, I had the lead until then, so I still was in the money. I just had to share more of it.
